The Shell Is Calling
The Shell Is Calling
The Chicago Code Camp is being held on Saturday, May 1st. I’ll be presenting a PowerShell Deep Dive. If you are in the Chicago area and want to get down into the guts of the PowerShell language and runtime (or many other great sessions!), come on out. There were 100 97 tickets available last time I checked…

Hey,
I attended your PowerShell talk at Chicago Code Camp. To be honest, it was way over my head (I should have probably realized that by the “deep dive” in the title). I wanted to ask some basic questions, but the discussion moved more towards the advanced topics that (in my mind) are of interest for mainly the admins. I wanted to know what PowerShell can do for us developers?
Is it easier to use than the cmd.exe? I mean, it would be cool to see how to accomplish basic tasks. Ex:
Is it easy to parse log files? Plain text? CSV? Xml?
How to search for all source files, then zip them up?
How to count lines in your source files?
How to, say, get list of CPP files that are missing corresponding H file?
Is PowerShell any good for code generation?
I’ve noticed you’ve been using the ISE. Would you say that’s mostly what you use? Or maybe the “blue dos box”? Is the interactive shell recommended over cmd.exe? Why? (it seems slow).
Would you mind doing a demo or pointing me towards some resources for the beginners?
Cheers,
- Filip.
